2026 Mazda CX-30
Diminutive Mazda crossover delivers the goods.
The folks at Mazda developed a workable marketing niche for itself posting a mission statement appealing to a mass audience desiring comparatively affordable means of transport with an edge towards spirited maneuvers. Here in the States, all Mazda vehicles sport four-cylinder or inline six-cylinder engines, merging decent fuel economy with fun-to-drive cornering characteristics in sedan, crossover and iconic two-seat Mazda Miata MX-5 convertible body styles. No pickups or large truck-based sport utility vehicles dot the dealer landscape.
With the average sticker price now topping $51,000 for a new vehicle in the U.S., the capable, versatile Mazda CX-30 crossover with a $26,375 starting price makes a strong case for itself.
The diminutive Mazda CX-30 (debuting in the 2020 model year) eventually replaced the similarly spelled CX-3 (minus the ending Zero), a slightly smaller crossover arriving in the 2015 model year. In the 2020 and 2021 model years, Mazda dealers sold CX-3s and CX-30s side by side until the CX-3 s quiet and predictable retirement at the end of 2021. Mazda s CX-30 measures more than four inches longer than the bygone CX-3 with a three-inch longer wheelbase (distance between front and rear axle), more second row leg room and a higher horsepower base engine. Consider it a substantially sized opportunity within the subcompact realm.
A total of eight trims arrive for the 2026 model year, a large number from which to choose considering its entry-level status. Each adds additional standard features the higher one travels up the trim ladder with only a handful of extras offered. A new Aire trim launched in 2026 with gloss black exterior accents, black roof rails, unique 18-inch metallic black aluminum wheels and black side-view mirrors.
Six trims offer the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine cranking out 186 horsepower with recommended regular 87-octane fuel: 2.5 S, 2.5 S Select Sport, 2.5 S Preferred, 2.5 S Aire, 2.5 S Carbon Edition and 2.5 S Premium. A pair of trims offer the Dynamic Pressure turbocharged 2.5-liter four cylinder upping the horsepower ante to 227 with regular 87-octane fuel. Opt for peak performance 93 octane with the dynamic turbo and horses jump to an impressive 250. These include the 2.5 Turbo Aire and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus. If the budget allows, it s the recommended choice with peppier pickup.
Expect 24 miles per gallon city and 31 mpg highway with the naturally aspirated four and a 22/30 split for the dynamic turbocharged four; average but far from class leading. Both engines connect up with a six-speed automatic transmission with two drive modes: regular and sport. Both these engines power the meatier CX-50 compact crossover. All Mazda vehicles base off a uni-body car-like platform rather than the heavier body-on-frame style.
Every CX-30 trim sports standard Midwest friendly all-wheel drive which Mazda markets as i-ACTIV. It s not full-time all-wheel drive (powering all four wheels whenever the engine hums) but active, all-wheel drive, sending power to front tires during normal situations and automatically summoning the rear tires to join when sensing slippage. This type of active all-wheel drive conserves fuel a tiny bit better than the full-time variety.
Mazda s i-ACTIV design completes this process by collecting data not only from wheel speed and engine dynamics, but 27 other variables up to 200 times per second. These variables include G-forces, outside temperature, braking activity and even windshield wiper activity to detect a precise, seamless, instant shift from front wheel to all-wheel activity.
Also standard in all CX-30 s and part of the i-ACTIV equation: G-Force Control (GVC) Plus, a step up in grip tech from the long ago implemented limited slip differential (LSD). General Motors coined the marketing term Positraction in the late 1950s when introducing this stabilizing betterment. The GVC Plus operates with new-for-2026, brake-actuated limited slip differentials delivering improved stability.
Simply put, a rear-wheel or front wheel drive vehicle s limited slip differential redirects engine torque through clutch packs and other mechanics/electronics to the wheel with the most grip. Differentials allow wheels at each end of the axle to rotate at different speeds, necessary when cornering as the outside tire requires more travel distance. A traditional open differential (one without LSD), if encountering mud, would direct power to the wheel with the least resistance, causing a potential stuck in the mud scenario.
Standard GVC Plus delivers a constant steering feel while keeping all onboard planted during spirited turns and lane changes within the CX-30 s all-wheel drive format. As driver s steer out of a corner, GVC Plus applies a light brake force through reduced engine torquing to outer wheels, motivating the vehicle back into to a straight-line motion. This GVC Plus technology and brake-actuated LSD limits slippage during inclement weather better than many current subcompact crossovers.
While Mazda s 2026 lineup returns without pure electric vehicle (EV) availabilities, two larger choices, the CX-70 and CX-90 crossovers include a PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) option with 30 miles of pure electric driving available (thanks to a fully charged, onboard lithium-ion battery pack) before a gasoline engine snaps into action for hundreds of additional miles.
Starting price for a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter S trim checks in at $26,375. Our sparkling Deep Crystal Blue Mica turbo Aire edition checked in at $34,410. Extras included a sliding cargo cover ($165), illuminated lower door sill plates ($575) and in-dash navigation ($450) bringing the bottom line to $37,095 after tacking on a $1,495 destination charge.
The CX-30 includes round wheel wheels with protective black composite cladding extending to front/rear bumpers and lower side doors. The rear liftback (power operated in both turbo models and 2.5 S Premium) includes a top-side spoiler and wiper swiping up from the bottom. Duo outboard exhaust pipes frame the lower back birth. Strap-like pull handles adorn all side doors. Brake/rear LED red-colored tail lights craft a circular, horseshoe style, three-quarter shape below a brow with a round amber turn signal indicator inside. Our turbo Aire trim also included black framing surrounding side windows from the A to D pillars and the hatchback s side glass framing. A power-sliding moonroof lets light shine upon the first row only, arriving in most trims sans the S and S Select Sport.
The front grill includes Mazda s familiar winged logo front and center within logo inside a chrome-like circular format. It sits inside a honeycomb-like black mesh fill with hexagonal aspects bursting forth with outside framing resembling a stretched oval with contoured corners. It s flanked by narrow wraparound housing containing a single LED bulb.
The interior dashboard includes a familiar theme found in the iconic two-seat MX-5 Miata convertible and a bit of a throwback to a simpler time when analog-like gauges ruled the road with their easy-glance, macro characteristics.
The CX-30 s instrument panel includes a trio of brushed aluminum trimmed circles shaded by a half-moon brim easily viewable from inside the top-half of the three-spoke steering wheel. With its three-dimensional vibe the IP boasts white backlighting and straight white interior dancing needles. The large center circle includes speedometer information in semi-circle form with a digital window tucked inside adjusting to a trio of selections prompted via the three-spoke steering wheel s 9 o clock spike. A slightly smaller right orb include dominant half-moon fuel and temperature gauges and a pair of dancing needles while the left-side circle houses a tachometer and single needle. Also framing the central circle, a right-side half-moon secondary bar-style fuel gauge with actual numbers to better gauge what s left in the tank and left-side instant miles per gallon gauge also offering numerical visuals.
Most trims sport a diminutive-by-comparison 10.25-inch, full-color, infotainment display utilizing an inside curser to indicate selections. Both S and S Select trims scale the size down to 8.8 inches. This flat, thin, rectangular screen rises up from the dashboard s top inside a tub-like bowl. The screen s interior curser moves via a Mazda Connect infotainment system with two different-sized/shaped twist dials between front bucket seats. The larger chrome dial operates the curser and pushes downward when making a selection. It s flanked by a quad of quick pick push button, short cut choices. The smaller, taller twist knob controls volume.
The screen s home page features five main options including: Information, Communications, Navigation, Entertainment and Settings. Wireless Android Auto and Apple Car Play interactivity arrive standard in all trims except base S which requires a wired Plug into a Type C USB port. Keep in mind when utilizing Android Auto or Apple Car Play connected Smartphones, the largely non-touch enabled screen becomes touch friendly.
Dual side by side beverage holders (with spring-loaded tabs handling various sized vessels) reside in front of the Mazda Connect knobs and the mechanical, vertically sliding transmission shifter/handle. Below the center dash and fore of the cup holder duo, a single unit wireless charging pad resting in a rectangular fashion (in all trims sans the entry S and Select Sport). The driver s seat includes power fore/aft functions and a power-operated backrest monitored from the seat s outboard side. Also in the area, a push-operated lumbar support circle increases the size of an air bladder inside the lower backrest. The passenger seat manually operates via a pull bar under seat while the backrest lowers and raises from a side lever.
Seats throughout our turbocharged Aire Edition included white leatherette materials with creamy gray synthetic suede inserts for a welcome touch-of-elegance.
The electronic push button start resides on the dash right of the steering column. Two capital D shaped vents surround the deep-set instrument panel (with the right end a mirror D image). To its right, a small, welcome rectangular climate control center (conveniently separate from the multi-function screen) with dual front temperature zones operated by twist dials at each end. In between, a half-dozen push buttons monitoring fan direction and direction along with air conditioning and front/rear defrosters. A top-side digital window offers temperature readouts and a bar-type graph illustrating fan speed. Below the push buttons reside the red hazard light distress button along with heated front cushion buttons. A pair of narrow rectangular in-dash vents facing the passenger s seat extends to the right of the temperature center. The dashboard includes multiple levels and color tones with a variety of textures.
All models include automatic bright-sensing headlights reacting within a split second to activate/deactivate the higher/brighter setting depending upon roadway feedback; welcome especially when traversing rural roads after dark.
All doors offer up corresponding interior ceiling handles, if needed for egress and ingress. Expect better than anticipated subcompact headroom as my six-foot, two-inch frame experienced amble headspace in both rows. Although marketed as a five-seater, two adult riders situate optimally in the very cozy back. Seatbacks fold relatively flat onto cushions in a 60/40 split with the push of a topside latch. The larger driver-side section includes dual cup holders. A welcome temporary spare resides under the flat cargo floor.
With great balance, predictable gear shifts and pleasant interior design, this first-generation CX-30 delivers the goods along with good looks.
